Pin Box too close to tailgate
« on: May 19, 2017, 06:33:57 pm »
Wanted to get some opinions (did PM trans, but couldn't figure out to how to include a picture).  The rear of my pin box is too close to my tailgate and when turning, the pin box will hit the top of the bed before the cap ever comes close to the cab of the truck.  Trans recommended cutting the pin box back, but does that void warranty?  Do they sell shorter pin boxes or does that even matter.  I have the Andersen hitch and I can raise the nose up, but I am already about 4" nose high on the 5er.

I believe I would turn the receiver that is mounted on your pin box to the rear first. I know it will move the rv closer to the truck but you will still have plenty of clearance.

Yeah, I believe I would move the RV closer to the cab of the truck. I would also lower the RV. Looks like there is plenty of clearance.

ARe you using a typical fifth wheel hitch or something different?  I plan to move this around this evening.  Head out tomorrow on a 4-hour drive south so will get real world experience soon.

Don't the Anderson hitch have adjustment forward and back? I think the receiver that mounts to the king pin can also be mounted to the front or back also , correct? If it helps you any my King Pin is dead center over my axle.

Just a quick update...

Did not adjust hitch, but did go on a 4.5 hour drive for camping this weekend through some difficult turns, undulation, etc. in terrain and no issues with the hitch and clearance on the bed.  I kept a close eye on it and am already starting to learn the limitations I have with it and doing fine with it.  I may still turn the adapter on the king pin around, but as for now, all is good!

Just keep in mind that with the adapter in the forward position it is effectively adding length to the pin box which is adding extra stress on the mount and attaching frame (like putting a longer breaker bar and socket on a bolt). Remember, this is just my opinion, I would definitely turn the adapter to the rear if any way possible.

Glad you was able to get out and have a good trip. :)
