Alright all you Myrtle Beach travelers out there.  We are tinkering with the idea of heading to Myrtle Beach after Williamsburg this April.  Anyone have any tips or info?  Ocean Lakes, Pirates Cove, either state park?

Ocean Lakes is a very large property. The camping area is a small part of it. Not sure what to even call it. It has camping and everything from large beach houses to small house trailers. Some permanent residents, some seasonals, and some vacation rentals. We rented a beach house about ten years ago. We were there in the middle of summer and it was packed. Golf carts dominate the scene. That being said it was fun for our group. We had teenagers so it was perfect for them. There is a large rec room/video game room. Several pools, and the beach. No trouble makers just Lots of people hustling and bustling lol! We enjoyed it as I like to hang out and people watch. Plus we didnt have bored teenagers sitting around the house saying "there's nothing to do". It is at the south end of Myrtle Beach and you have drive to everything. The strip is horrible in summer but maybe not too bad in April. Checkout when spring break occurs that may be a factor. Another factor is spring "Bike week". Not sure if they still do that cuz the locals really werent fond of it. I dont think they need the extra income and didn't really appreciate the Harley crowd. I had friends who used to go and they get pretty rowdy. But MB has always been busy. If you want a more peaceful area go to Outer Banks or something smaller like Wilmington.

when is your break ?  we were thinking of going to the FL panhandle for the week, but that fell though.  as a backup right now i have a ressie just south of charleston, SC, here:

http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/edistobeach/introduction.aspx

we are also thinking of DC, and staying in college park, MD at the federal campground, here:

http://www.nps.gov/gree/index.htm

we stayed there last year, and it is a gem inside the beltway....dry camping with limited facilities though and no ressies allowed....

i want to hit south of charleston, and i do think that is where we will end up.  our week is the week of the 14th....

We have stayed at Pirateland several times in April, and had reservations for this year too, until recently. We like to book a site in the row next to the beach, facing the beach, and next to one of the stairways over the dune (which protects the camper from beach winds). From our site, we walk across the camp road, up the stairs, and we are on the beach. We stayed our first year in a hybrid, and it was pretty quiet at night sleeping under tenting - loved going to sleep to the sound of ocean waves crashing.

Booking in January, we have never had trouble getting any site we request for April. I hear it is a different story in summer, though I can't understand why - the weather was perfect in April. We were outside all of the time, having morning coffee on the beach, doing all the touristy things. In Summer, I can see being in the water, but that is all. Otherwise, indoors with AC is where I would be. We had our AC on for one of the days we were there - and that was just for the dogs we left inside while we were out touring. All the other days, and definitely all the nights, open windows were more than enough to keep us comfortable.

In April, Pirateland was pretty empty on the weekdays, but would fill up on the weekends. Lots of kids driving golf carts when it filled up, but other than that they kept a tight ship. The last time we were there, one guy nearby gave is neighbors, and later the Pirateland officials, some grief. He was escorted out by the local sheriff before dark.

They have a heated pool, a lazy river, and a beautiful beach. I'm wishing we were there now...

Thanks for the review.  I'm pretty sure we will miss bike week as it is May 9th (some else warned us about this week also).  Most likely the week of April 20th, so spring break may still be in play.

We have a two week period between 4/12 and 4/27.  As it stands now, we're heading to Williamsburg, VA during the first week (with the D&T group).  And the second week is a huge question mark.
