Well....

Oh boy, where do I begin? Went to this campground because it is close to where my father lives. It was recommended by a friend, because of its proximity. That's where the convenience ended this past weekend.

We dropped into this campground at about 9:30 PM. Bamboo or something close to it had overgrown the pedestal and septic connections. Pitch black, no light any where. Finally got set up and headed to bed.

12am...ish the sound of a very loud engine reverberated through the hills followed by the depositing of 1/4" of rubber on the campground road about 30 feet or so from the rear of our 5vr. WTF!!

In the morning, with the ability to see, we realized we were in the annex of the basement of the back lot of the campground. A kind of almost forgotten section of it populated by 1 rough, and 3 beat up travel trailers/fifth wheels and a coveted school bus painted in Harley colors and named the Hoghill Hilton.

Then the participants for the 3rd annual "Rats Nest Run In" began to arrive. the area we were in began to fill with truck campers, travel trailers, tents, conversion vans, a station wagon... still trying to figure out how he got a reservation for a site.... anyway, if you could sleep in it or on it, it was there.

The back side of the campground was seasonals. There was some dignity there. it was pretty neat, plenty of room, pretty nicely manicured, but devoid of people. Awnings down, no vehicles. That should of been our second warning.

Anyone that had the ability to wield a welder, cutting torch or work on a engine met here driving, towing, or flat-bedding their pride and joy of a rat rod to the grassy knoll.

You don't know what a Rat Rod is? You take a piece of this car, and a piece of that car, and maybe a piece of that old beat up truck down yonder, and weld them together. VIOLA! Rat Rod!

Now there were some really nice cars there. And I did get some pictures of them. But the pictures were limited by the few number of "really Nice" stuff that was there.

Oh the tennis Court!? Yeah the "Resort" converted the tennis court into a Burn-out Pit. Complete with Bulldozer, equipped with rubber padding over the blade, you snug the front end up to that there dozer and smoke'em up! EVERYBODY got a chance!

EVERYBODY

Did I mention that there were nearly 400 entrants? No kidding....

And music... Gots to have music. 15 bands that consisted of people that had just learned to play what ever instrument they were sitting in front of. Or at least it sounded that way. Even the Rats Nest Run In folks kinda stared at the stage, mouths agape, a tooth here, or there showing, a look of confusion, and a smattering of applause at the end of a tune, or screach, or what ever.....

Oh! And what would a Rats Nest Run In be with out a nightly Fire works display? Now 'cause this is the Rats Nest Run In we's got to do this big like.

4" and 5" mortars literally 40-50 feet behind our fifth wheel.

And don't forget after the Grand Finale you have to start your engine and spool it real loud like!

5 years ago their main building burned down. Then it was rebuilt, then the pub burned down, it was rebuilt. Or both the lodge and the pub burned down at the same time and was rebuilt. In any case the main lodge, house, bar what-have-you is nice, I'll grant you that. Beyond that the entire place needs an enema.

Blackthorn Resort, West Durham, NY forever to stay in our memories...hopefully fading, smokey, distant memories.....

 The sooner the better.

I took pictures of the good ones...

yes that WAS a keg for a gas tank. There was a theme there as there were several others following suit. some Pony some full sized.

My favorite was (no picture) seat made out of a crate with a foam seat cushion, raw foam of course, made out of a Lincoln Continetal rear end with cuts made to shorten the width of the bumper and trunk, a ford.....something, and a old 50-60 Chevy sedan front end. Tires didn't match, hubs didn't match, rusty black rear, rusty green front, rusty rust roof top....

It runs....

Sweet....

There you go, a potential solution to all those looking to add an auxiliary fuel tank to the bed of their truck.  Just go down to the beverage store, buy a keg of beer of our choice, drink the beer (responsibly of course), and you got yourself an auxiliary fuel tank!!

We used to run beer kegs in the race cars, but it became a safety issue! 8)
