If you're like my family we take advantage of regular weekends as well as long weekends, and vacations of course.

One thing my wife likes to do is to select a crock pot meal. She'll put together the crock pot before we go to work on Friday and set it to low.

The crock pot goes all day long, but at a lower temperature for a longer time. When we get home for work, hitch up and go, the crock pot goes into the microwave with the top secured for traveling. If anything does spill, it is contained and easily cleaned. We have not had an issue yet.

Once we get to the campground and are getting things set up, the crock pot gets plugged in on high. The pot itself retains heat and since these regular weekends we keep traveling under 2 hours, it usually takes next to no time till the dinner is piping hot. Most of the time, when I finish setting up, its ready.

it makes what could be a busy evening, much more relaxing. Especially in the fall. That hot pot of chilli, stew or pot roast is most welcome on a cool October evening!

I have to say, we tried it one time and never went back. You can still enjoy your libations and have something good all ready to have. I bet your DW and DKs will appreciate it!

Wow I never thought of trying that. We do a lot of crockpot cooking when we are camping but I've never thought of cooking something beforehand and having it ready when you get there. I'll have to try that on our next trip next weekend.

Care to share any recipe ideas?

I think I have a few"From Scratch" recipes, but most of the time we are doing this for the ease of it and we'll use one several packaged seasoning mixes to do a meal with. Pot Roast, Beef Stew, Chicken Soup/Stew, etc. etc.

The frst step, no matter what you are doing is to first line the crock pot with a cook-in bag. Same sort of thing you'd use for a turkey.

One of my favorites has been Pot Roast: Knorr Seasoning package, Potato, Celery, Carrots, Onion, Turnip (if you like that). 7am turn the crock pot on low. Let cook, tightly covered till your ready to leave, unless that will be late. I let it cook on low for about 10-11 hours. Unplug, and place into the camper.

Once at your site, connect power, plug the crock in and put on high. Continue the set up for camping. Once done, before taking the dinner out of the bag (if you prefer), poke holes into the bottom and drain the juices into a sauce pan, mix one tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 cups cold water and set aside, add to the drained pan juices one tablespoon of Gravy Master and heat the pan up over the stove, just before the pan begins to simmer, stir the cornstarch and cold water and slowly add to the pan while stirring. Bring to just simmering and shut off the heat.

Serve the pot roast and vegetables with your freshly made gravy poured over the pot roast in a large serving dish or offer seperately. The beauty of this is.. let the crock pot cool and put it away (its clean!), wash one sauce pan, measuring cup, (serving dish if used) and silverware used, toss the bag, and paper plates.  You're done...

It's hot tasty and requires little effort and allows the cook, who ever that is to take care of the things that need to get done AND look like a culinary hero..

 Good stuff!

Uh Yeah..! I forgot to mention that all the screws should be checked on the crock pot for 8 inch pounds of torque and that we use Guiness Stout in the Pot Roast....

Hot dog, microwave 1 minute slap it on a roll....tube steak...and no dishes...grey poupon of course! sometimes I'll opt for the campfire with a stick, instead of the microwave if I want that "rustic" flavor

Frozen meatballs, jarred alfredo saue, sundried tomotoes, mushrooms makes an easy but good crock pot meal. I bought a second one just for the TT. I never thought of doing it the day before we pull-out though. Thanks!

i like the concept eric, thanks for posting it.

i think when we go to the cape for columbus day weekend we will try this with a pot roast.  we usually just throw something on the grill for the first night but have made the sides ahead of time and just have to heat them up or spoon them out.....

i agree that early and late season camping is the time to do this one....
